How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

A child’s communication skills are developing all the time, with interactions and experiences that shape their understanding.

It can be difficult sometimes to determine whether their skills are developing appropriately, and when you should seek assistance.

It’s important that any communication difficulties are addressed early, to minimise the impacts, frustration and ultimately the time and effort it takes to address them.

Early intervention = reduced cost, time and impact.

If you suspect any communication difficulties with your child, schedule an appointment with our team for an assessment.

We’ll run through a series of exercises, designed to test a range of speech and language skills, and address any challenges with an appropriate treatment.

Here are some of the things to look out for:

  • Unclear speech or stuttering
  • Difficulty using sentences and correct grammar
  • Difficulty following and remembering directions
  • Understanding questions and conversation
  • Struggles with classroom and homework
  • Difficulty with reading and writing
  • Struggles with making friends and playing with others
  • Reading and expressing emotions

It’s Talk Time!

What to Expect

When you're expecting.. an appointment with a speech pathologist! If you've never been to a speech pathologist, or know of anyone who has, you probably have a few ideas (or none!) about what to expect. First of all, we are fun and engaging. We will probably start off...

Invisible Disorders

As with all learning for children, learning to talk happens at different rates for every child. Speech development and language starts at birth; our imitating of baby sounds and responding to their needs is just the beginning of their learning to communicate journey....

Intervention at an early stage, will provide benefits for life.
